    Laboratory Preparation of Hydrogen

Hydrogen gas is produced when Zinc, Magnesium, or other active metals are treated with dilute Sulfuric acid.

    \( \begin{aligned} & Zn + \text{dil.} H_2SO_4 \rightarrow ZnSO_4 + H_2 \\ \end{aligned} \)

    Testing of Hydrogen Gas

When a burning matchstick is placed over the mouth of the gas jar containing Hydrogen gas, it immediately extinguishes with a pop sound.

    Laboratory Preparation of Nitrogen Gas

Nitrogen gas is produced when the mixture of Sodium Nitrite and Ammonium chloride in the solution state.

    \( \begin{aligned} & NaNO_2 + NH_4Cl \xrightarrow{\text{heat}} NaCl + H_2O + N_2 \\ \end{aligned} \)

    Testing of Nitrogen Gas

When a burning Magnesium ribbon is inserted into the gas jar containing nitrogen, it burns in nitrogen forming a yellow powder of Magnesium nitride (Mg3N2).

    Laboratory Preparation of Oxygen Gas

In the laboratory, Oxygen gas can be produced through two methods. They are:

    1. Using Heat

Oxygen gas is produced when Potassium chlorate (KClO3) is heated in the presence of Manganese dioxide (MnO2) as a catalyst.

    \( \begin{aligned} & KClO_3 \xrightarrow{MnO_2} KCl + O_2 \\ \end{aligned} \)

    2. Without Using Heat

Oxygen is produced when Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is decomposed in the presence of Manganese dioxide (MnO2) as a catalyst.

    \( \begin{aligned} & H_2O_2 \xrightarrow{MnO_2} H_2O + O_2 \\ \end{aligned} \)

    Testing of Oxygen Gas

When the burning matchstick is inserted into the gas jar containing Oxygen gas, the flame becomes brighter.
