Laboratory Preparation of Hydrogen

Interactive Chemistry Simulation for School Students

Experiment Status

Acid Added:No
Reaction:Not Started
Gas Collected:0%

Apparatus Required

Flat Bottom Flask (with side arm)
Thistle Funnel
Delivery Tube
Pneumatic Trough
Gas Jar
Zinc Granules (Zn)
Dilute Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)

Chemical Reaction

Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2

Zinc reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to produce zinc chloride and hydrogen gas.

Key Points

H₂ is collected by downward displacement of water
It is a colourless and odourless gas
It is lighter than air
It burns with a pop sound (flammable)

Safety Precautions

Keep away from naked flame (H₂ is highly flammable)
Handle acids with care
Work in a well-ventilated area
Wear safety goggles and gloves
